Natural Pet Care
In an economically-challenging time, people are looking to save money where they can. Some pet owners are turning to natural pet care and preventative therapies to keep their pets healthy, rather than expensive medical procedures and prescription drugs.
The holistic health field has grown drastically in the last couple of decades, with more and more doctors opening up their practices to alternative therapies and medicines. This is true for the health of humans, as well as animals. While most veterinarians do not completely disregard the aid of some medical procedures and medicines, holistic veterinarians emphasize a more natural approach that includes a homemade or “natural” diet, preventative care, and a strong focus on mental and emotional well being.
If feeding your pet a homemade, raw food diet isn’t for you. Many pet supply companies have responded to the recent push for a more natural and organic variety of pet foods and products. While holistic veterinarians often prefer a raw diet, these products may contain less chemicals and additives than traditional pet foods. Another emphasis of holistic medicine is exercise and dietary supplements. It’s important for the health of your pet and the prevention of disease that your animals maintains a healthy weight and takes in the nutrients he or she requires. Many large breed dogs may require much more exercise than their smaller counterparts. If your pet seems restless or is having behavioral issues, this may be a sign they aren’t getting enough physical activity. It’s a good idea to walk or run your dogs daily. Even small breeds require exercise to be healthy.
