Pet Care
Those who’ve owned a pet know that a pet is more than just an animal companion. They are part of the family. In fact, the relationships humans can form with a pet can be extremely close and may last the entire lifetime of that pet. As such, it’s important to exercise proper pet care to ensure your pet is healthy and happy.
Dogs have been described as “man’s best friend.” Perhaps the most common pet, at least in the United States, the dog is an intelligent and loyal creature that serves many purposes in a family beyond companion. Larger, stronger breeds are often used as guard dogs, to protect the family and the family home. These breeds require different care than smaller pets. In addition to adequate nutrition, bigger dogs usually require large amounts of exercise. This can be done by walking or running your dog. Many communities have built enclosed dog parks just for the purpose of allowing your dog to run and play freely. This is especially helpful if your dog lives in a confined space, such as an apartment, or without a yard. Smaller breeds still also require exercise, but will usually much less than their larger counterparts and may also tire out very quickly. Their nutritional needs will also be smaller than larger dogs. It’s important to talk to your veterinarian about dog supplies and how much food and exercise your dog requires.
Another popular pet is the common house cat. While cats tend to be more independent than dogs, they are emotive animals and can certainly bond with their human companions. Some studies have even suggested that those who own cats may reduce their risk of certain diseases, as the action of petting a cat may actually reduce stress. Because house cats are fairly sedentary by nature, it’s a good idea to discuss your pet’s nutritional needs with your veterinarian.
In addition to proper nutrition and exercise, you should be aware of any vaccinations your animal requires to stay in good health. This is especially true if your animal comes into contact with other animals, as many pet diseases are communicable just by coming into casual contact with another animal. Though they are few, there are also some diseases that may be passed from animal to human, especially through the handling of waste products. Understanding proper sanitation within your home and of your animal is important not only for the good health of your animal, but for the health of yourself and your family.
